November 2008

It wasn’t possible for me to see the Rathlin Players during Festival Week in the summer but now I get another chance. They are performing in Ballycastle and I see the two plays. The hall is packed to capacity and everyone enjoys the entertainment.

Towards the end of the month I get across to Rathlin although the weather is poor. It is cold and I must admit, I keep my head down, which means that I don't see too much in the line of birds. I can hear, however, and it doesn't seem that I'm missing much.

There are good numbers of seals, strung out along the shoreline rather than in a group which is the normal situation. So I am unaccompanied as I walk to the Rue and back. In the intervening six weeks since I last visited, two houses have sprung up and an abandoned vehicle has been removed. Apart from the driver of a lorry, I am the only passenger on the return trip that afternoon. I wonder, next day, whether the boats are running as the forecasters are right and a Force 7 gale is blowing.
