March 2008

Spring is on the way, but nobody has told the pasture or the hedges. Brown bracken, bare twigs and frazzled grass dominate the landscape. But, on the water, there are big numbers of eider duck beside St Thomas’.

I am spending a half day with an extended family group who have come together for an Easter holiday on the North Coast. The conversation is wide ranging and, after spotting the first of this year’s auks, we talk about penguins and the threat to their habitat in the Falklands. Best bird for Rathlin proves to be four Snow Bunting on Kebble.
